Running the World's Largest LGBTQ Comic Con

Flame Con is a venture of the non-profit Geeks OUT, and is a comics and pop culture event geared towards the queer community. Flame Con first started in 2015, during which I served as Assistant Art Director. In 2016 I rose to full-fledged Art Director of the show. From 2017-2019 I was promoted to Chair of the event, running the entirety of Flame Con with the help of dedicated volunteers. Under my tenure leading the event, we went from a Brooklyn-based small-size convention of 2,000 attendees, to a Manhattan-based mid-size convention of 7,500+ attendees. While in recent years I have delegated much of the design to my creative team, I am still responsible for the core look of the show. I developed the event’s palette and style guide, the event’s media kit, and created the Flame Con website. I even hand print and mount much of the event’s signage. While I have stepped down into an advisory role in 2020, I am still heavily involved in the production and continued success of the convention. It is worth noting that Flame Con is a 100% volunteer endeavor, and every cent made from the show goes right back into the community and growing the event.

There was an undercurrent of joy that I hadn’t felt at similar events…
